Part 1

  • Skin cancer epidemiology and burden in general practice.
  • Systematic full-body skin examination technique.
  • Introduction to dermoscopy: colours, structures, polarisation.
  • Three-point checklist for pigmented lesions.
  • Prediction without pigment for non-pigmented lesions.
  • Cryotherapy, curettage, punch, and shave biopsies.
  • Live patient demonstration – full skin check.
  • Supervised practical: biopsies and excisions.

Part 2

  • Pattern recognition of common benign lesions.
  • Chaos and clues algorithm.
  • Clinical decision-making for melanoma management.
  • Interpreting melanoma histopathology and staging.
  • Wide local excision margins and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
  • Live patient demonstration – excision(s).
  • Supervised practical: ellipse, flap, and suturing techniques.

About the Presenter

Dr. Malav Shah

BMedSt, MD, FRACGP, SCCA Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor

Dr Mal is a GP practicing skin cancer medicine with a particular focus on complex flap and graft reconstruction, and surgery of high-risk anatomical sites (ears, nose, lips). He practices at Logan Skin Clinic and as a visiting skin doctor at Edmonton Family Medical Centre, Cairns.

He holds accreditation from the Skin Cancer College of Australasia in advanced dermoscopy and skin cancer surgery. He maintains engagement with international best practice, most recently at the International Dermoscopy Society’s Short Course on Dermoscopy in Austria (2026). An active medical educator, Dr Mal supervises early-career skin cancer doctors and delivers this two-day Dermoscopy workshop for GPs.
