Wheels of Wellness (WoW) is a community-based primary health care service delivering outreach and clinic-based care to people experiencing homelessness and complex vulnerability in Cairns.
Our multidisciplinary team includes GPs, nurses, social work, and Indigenous Health Practitioners, working across clinic, outreach, and community settings to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and accessible healthcare.
We meet people where they are — in shelters, crisis accommodation, public spaces, and at our Sheridan Street clinic — ensuring continuity of care for those who often fall through the gaps.
About the role:
We are seeking a passionate and culturally grounded Indigenous Health Worker / Practitioner to join our team.
This role is central to delivering culturally safe care, supporting engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, and improving health outcomes for people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.
You will work across outreach and clinic settings, supporting both direct client care and coordination with the broader health and social services system.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver culturally safe, trauma-informed care
- Engage and build trust with clients
- Support GPs and nurses with care and follow-up
- Participate in outreach (streets, shelters, accommodation)
- Assist with referrals and service coordination
- Maintain accurate clinical records
About you:
Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (genuine occupational requirement)
- Qualification as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Worker or Practitioner (or working towards)
- Strong understanding of cultural safety and community engagement
- Experience working with vulnerable populations (e.g. homelessness, AOD, mental health) – highly regarded
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Commitment to improving health equity and access
