New ambulance access opens at Cairns South Medicare Urgent Care Clinic

Improved entry to support faster, safer patient care

— The dedicated QAS entry will improve patient flow and safety, making it easier for paramedics to deliver urgent care to the local community.

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) is pleased to announce the official opening today (Wednesday 3 September) of a new Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) access point at the Cairns South Medicare Urgent Care Clinic.

The dedicated QAS entry will improve patient flow and safety, making it easier for paramedics to deliver urgent care to the local community.

Access is via the roundabout past McDonald’s, leading through the rear of the car park. A new carport has been constructed to ensure QAS vehicles are undercover during patient pick-ups and drop-offs.

The clinic has also installed an extra-wide automatic door, enabling seamless access for stretchers and mobility-assisted patients.

NQPHN Chief Executive Officer Ben Tooth said the new QAS access point highlighted the clinic’s commitment to delivering timely, accessible health services to the Cairns community.

“This new entry point is a vital step in ensuring that patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” Mr Tooth said.

“By making ambulance access smoother and safer, we’re helping to reduce pressure on the Cairns Hospital emergency department, while also supporting local families to access bulk-billed urgent care closer to home.”

Cairns South Medicare Urgent Care Clinic Centre Manager Anna Stuy said the new facilities were designed with both patient comfort and staff efficiency in mind.

“We’ve listened to feedback from patients, staff, and the QAS, and we’re proud to deliver these upgrades,” Ms Stuy said.

“The new undercover drop-off point and wider automatic entry doors will make a real difference for patients arriving by ambulance, particularly during emergencies or severe weather.

“It’s another way we’re ensuring high-quality care is accessible for everyone in Cairns.”

The Cairns South Medicare Urgent Care Clinic is located at 5b Walker Rd, Edmonton, next to Balance! Edmonton Family Practice.

The clinic provides free bulk-billed care for urgent, non-life-threatening conditions that cannot wait for a regular GP appointment but do not require hospital emergency care.

Open seven days a week, including public holidays, the Cairns South Medicare Urgent Care Clinic treats conditions such as minor fractures, wounds, minor burns, infections, and illnesses, including urinary tract infections and gastroenteritis.

Patients can walk in without an appointment or referral.
