A regular column that features our region’s health workforce and shines a light on their important work

Name: Monique Sutton

Position: Senior Dietitian

Place of work: North and West Remote Health

Tell us about your role and what a typical day looks like?

As an outreach dietitian, I work within a multidisciplinary team to provide culturally appropriate, evidence-based and client-centred nutrition support to rural and remote communities across northern Queensland.

My work is incredibly varied, and a typical day can involve anything from travelling on the road, providing individual consults, delivering group education sessions, or running group cooking classes.

It’s a rewarding role that combines clinical care with community engagement and connection.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Travelling to different parts of Queensland is a unique privilege, and I really enjoy experiencing the character and sense of community each place has to offer.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is building meaningful, long-term relationships with clients and communities. I also really appreciate the variety and flexibility in my role – no two days are the same!

Is there a particular patient story or experience that has stuck with you?

A previous client was referred for significant unintentional weight loss and concerns of malnutrition. After an initial assessment, we were able to identify the main barriers impacting his intake and worked together to implement strategies to help him meet his nutritional needs.

I was also able to connect him with local community services that offered free or discounted groceries. Over the following months, his weight gradually increased, and he regained energy and strength, which allowed him to re-engage in community activities he previously enjoyed.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is building meaningful, long-term relationships with clients and communities. I also really appreciate the variety and flexibility in my role – no two days are the same!

Why do you choose to work in a regional, rural, or remote area?

I find it incredibly fulfilling to be part of a team that brings essential services to places where they’re truly needed. The connections built in these communities are genuine and the work feels purposeful. Small towns also do the best pub feeds!

What do you like to do outside of work when you are out and about in your community?

After work, I usually enjoy a walk, whether it’s around a lake, beach or park before having dinner with my colleagues. One of my favourite parts of outreach is visiting the local cafes for breakfast – Golden Lab in Hughenden is my favourite!

NWRH provides allied health, home and community supports, mental health and wellbeing, carer support and headspace services throughout rural, regional, and remote Queensland. Our goal is to assist in improving the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of the clients we work with.
