  • Develop a roster of patients by providing compassionate, professional care.

Mookai Rosie Bi-Bayan (Mookai Rosie) is a Cairns Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service that has been providing health worker supported accommodation and opportunistic primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children from remote Cape York and Torres Strait communities for over 30 years. With a strong and proud history with Far North Queensland’s vulnerable mothers and babies, Mookai Rosie is expanding their programs to encompass the holistic and often complex needs of family units.

Environment

This position is situated within Mookai Rosie’s Earlville clinic and plays a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary health team. Our clinic is the base of our First 1,000 days, multidisciplinary, wrap around model of care. The team is comprised of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, Midwives, Nurses, a Social and Emotional Wellbeing team, Clinical Educator, Clinical Facilitator, and Liaison Officers.

Purpose

This position is responsible for the provision of medical services, health surveillance, maintenance, and promotion to Mookai Rosie clients. This position will provide comprehensive and holistic healthcare to individuals and families that present to our service in accordance with the Mookai Rosie strategic, governance, and accreditation frameworks.

Care coordination and referrals Scope

The position provides support within Mookai Rosie’ service model by addressing the health needs of individuals and families engaging with our health programs. Significant liaison and coordination with multidisciplinary teams is required, as is maintaining regular contact with internal and external health professionals, service providers, and other stakeholders to ensure effective outcomes for clients.

Essential qualifications and experience

Qualifications and registrations

  1. Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.
  2. Registration with the Medical Board of Queensland.
  3. Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency.
  4. FRACGP or ACRRM.
  5. DRANZCOG (female identified position).

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
  • Regional and remote healthcare experience is essential.

Essential attributes

  1. Ability to perform comprehensive health assessments and plan, implement, and evaluate clinical care and primary health care strategies.
  2. Knowledge, experience, and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s determinants of health.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  4. Commitment to work within the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control including willingness to develop the leadership, clinical skills, and confidence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce.
  5. Well-developed people skills with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work both independently, and collaboratively, in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  7. Knowledge and understanding of quality improvement processes and RACGP Standards.
  8. Evidence of vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, pertussis, hepatitis B, and two COVID-19 vaccinations plus at least one booster must be sighted by the organisation before employment is confirmed.
  9. Possess (or be willing to obtain) a Positive Notice Blue Card for employment.
  10. “C” Class QLD Driver’s Licence, with no restrictions

Wheels of Wellness (WoW) Ltd is a progressive, values-based not-for-profit charity, specialising in delivering primary healthcare to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the Cairns community. 

WoW’s highly motivated and committed team of healthcare professionals and volunteers deliver free, person-centered medical, allied healthcare, and social and emotional support. 

The WoW service model combines both a mobile outreach and fixed premises approach to the delivery of primary healthcare by GP’s, Indigenous health workers, registered nurses, and a mental health social worker. The aim is to provide a safe service, free from judgment where clients feel welcome and heard because we want them to remain engaged in their healthcare journey.

About the role

The Senior Registered Nurse role is a key position working closely with the Indigenous health worker, RNs, and GPs in the primary healthcare assessment, diagnoses and treatment of people experiencing homelessness or sleeping rough, Indigenous Australians, and people with diagnosed and undiagnosed mental illness, poverty, domestic and family violence.

Supported by the practice manager and senior medical officer the Senior RN role will ensure the safe daily operations of the clinic, oversight accreditation and quality improvement process, and have operational oversight of the Homeless Healthcare Partnership Program.

As part of the WoW team maintaining collaborative relationships with clients, referral partners and community stakeholders is important to the success of this role.

The role is supported by a passionate and dedicated multidisciplinary team. The service is fully bulk billed, with appointment times set to meet the complex needs of our clients

About you

This opportunity will suit an RN who is flexible, dynamic, and has a genuine desire to make a difference to the lives of our clients. Ideally, you will have five or more years’ experience working within primary healthcare and an interest in:
