Important information about General Practice and Pharmacy services during weather/disaster events
Weather or disaster events can impact the availability of general practices and pharmacies. Here's what you need to know to ensure you can access the care you need.
When your GP is closed or unavailable
- Emergencies: If you are seriously injured or require urgent medical assistance, call 000 immediately or, if possible, head to your nearest Emergency Department (ED)
- Non-urgent issues: Whenever possible, attend your regular GP during their opening hours.
- After hours care: If your GP is closed or unavailable, visit an Urgent Care Clinic (UCC). Find your nearest UCC here: www.health.gov.au/find-a-medicare-ucc.
- Mental Health: Townsville Head to Health is available. Find further information here: https://www.neaminational.org.au/services/townsville-head-to-health/
Planning ahead
- Stay updated: Many general practices and pharmacies update their emergency closure hours on their website, social media pages or voicemail. Always check these sources or call ahead before visiting.
- Medication supplies: If you need to refill prescriptions or stock up on medications, visit your local pharmacy. Pharmacists can often assist with certain medical queries and provide essential medications.
A note on patience
Remember, GPs may be busier than usual during a disaster event. Planning ahead and exploring alternative options, like pharmacies or UCCs, can help ease the strain on healthcare services while ensuring you get the care you need.
