• How GP can best assist patients with DED: noticing when symptoms worsen, key questions for screening diabetic patients, referrals and maintaining the multi-disciplinary relationship, management.

Dr Gary Deed is a general practitioner with a passionate interest in promoting quality patient care of diabetes in general practice through education, development of resources including guidelines, policy development, research and strategic collaboration. He is the Chair of the Diabetes Specific interest network for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), and a Ministerial appointment to the Commonwealth Diabetes Implementation Reference Group for Australia. He is the editor for the General Practice management of type 2 diabetes guideline for the RACGP. He is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow of Monash University and helps co-ordinate the NHMRC funded ‘STAREE’ Statins in Reducing Events in the Elderly trial - http://www.staree.org.au/ . He is a co-investigator for the He has published peer reviewed journal articles in diabetes and is an editor for Diabetes Therapy and adviser/editor for Endocrinology Today.

Associate Professor Peter van Wijngaarden

Deputy Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia, Clinical Director of KeepSight

Associate Professor Peter van Wijngaarden is Deputy Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne. He is a founding steering committee member and clinical director of KeepSight – a national program for diabetic retinopathy screening that seeks to reach every Australian with diabetes to prevent avoidable blindness. A/Prof van Wijngaarden is a Director of the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia and a member of the Research and Medical Committees of the Macular Disease Foundation of Australia. He is a member of the Australian Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Workforce Program Committee and the Futures of Ophthalmology Taskforce of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
