Cairns Head to Health community consultation (session 2)

Posted Monday 29 April 2024 | Northern Queensland PHN

Cairns Head to Health is a new service supporting people with their mental health and wellbeing.

It will offer a safe and welcoming space to talk to someone if you, or someone you care about, are in distress or need help finding the right mental health support.

Cairns Head to Health will be a free service, and you will be able to just walk in – no appointment or referral required.

Community consultation sessions

To ensure we deliver a service that meets the needs of our community, we are holding community consultation sessions. These sessions will begin with an overview on the Head to Health model and then get community insights and ideas for adapting the model to meet local needs.

Who should attend?

We are seeking 'people with direct lived or living experience of mental ill-health and carers, family, and kin'.

We use the phrase 'people with direct lived or living experience of mental ill-health' to describe people with a lived or living experience of mental illness, mental ill-health, and psychological distress. We recognise that there is diversity in personal experiences of mental health and wellbeing, noting that mental health is experienced on a spectrum and across a lifetime, and experiences of mental ill-health may be different for different people at different times.

We use the phrase 'carers, family, and kin' to describe families, friends, unpaid carers, and anyone whose primary relationship with the person concerned is a personal, supporting, and caring one.

We recognise the diversity of ways that people and communities conceptualise mental health and wellbeing. In particular, we recognise that the term ‘mental health’ does not fully describe the experiences of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 'Social and emotional wellbeing' is used by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to describe their social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing. It acknowledges the importance of connection to community, family, land, sea, culture, and spirituality to their wellbeing.
