The Use of AI-Based Scribing Software in General Practice - Risks and Rewards

Posted Friday 31 January 2025 | The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine

AI-based scribing tools are rapidly transforming Australian General Practice, with recent surveys suggesting that a growing number of GPs have already started incorporating them into their clinical workflows. These tools use audio recordings of consultations, transcribing them into detailed medical summaries. This technology promises significant time savings, improved efficiency, and enhanced accuracy in record-keeping, while also addressing clinician burnout and workforce shortages—particularly in rural and remote settings.

However, integrating AI scribes into clinical practice also introduces critical medicolegal challenges, including patient consent, data storage compliance, and privacy concerns.

This session will provide GPs and Rural Generalists with practical insights into the benefits and risks of these emerging tools, along with strategies for their safe and ethical implementation.

Learning outcomes

  1. Gain insights into the risks and benefits of using AI for problem definition, diagnosis, and management.
  2. Learn the importance of obtaining informed consent before recording consultations to comply with legal requirements.
  3. Understand data storage and privacy obligations to ensure compliance with Australian laws.
  4. Recognise the need to review AI-generated medical records for accuracy and alignment with the consultation.
