Paediatric post sepsis model of care

Posted Wednesday 13 November 2024 | Queensland Paediatric Sepsis Program

The Queensland Paediatric Sepsis Program (QPSP) has undertaken an extensive community consultation process to:

  • understand the needs of families following their child’s diagnosis of sepsis or following their child’s death due to sepsis
  • the key actions needed to sustainably provide post sepsis care for families (surviving and bereaved).

The findings of this research project, which included insights from consumers and health professionals from across the State of Queensland have been summarised in the Paediatric Post Sepsis Model of Care Report.

Survival from paediatric sepsis has increased, however, there remains a large gap in the understanding of paediatric sepsis survivorship or post sepsis care. In addition, for those who are bereaved due to sepsis, there is a significant gap in the provision of any structured bereavement support. This report aims to address that gap, identifying clear actions for the development of a Paediatric Post Sepsis Model of Care for surviving and bereaved families. These actions are in alignment with the Sepsis Clinical Care Standard 2022, and particularly Quality Statement 7 - “Care after Hospital and Survivorship”.
