The Cairns Group
Welcome to the next meeting of The Cairns Group. A monthly meeting, on the first Monday or Tuesday of each month, we welcome general practitioners (GPs) from across the region to attend in-person or virtually.
Keep Calm and Wear Sunscreen
This month we will hear from two of our GP skin cancer colleagues, Dr Peter Smith and Dr Lee Jones.
A Melanoma Toolbox
Presented by Dr Peter Smith, the practice owner of Clifton Beach Medical and Surgical. He has been a General Practitioner for more than 20 year and has experience in all aspects of primary health care. Dr Smith has a special interest/qualification in dermatology and skin cancer medicine. He has a specific interest in men’s health and chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis. Dr Smith has extensive experience performing vasectomies and complicated skin cancer surgery, particularly on the head and neck.
A Keratinocyte Toolbox
Presented by Dr Lee Jones, a practice owner of Northern Skin Doctors and Yorkey's Medical. Dr Lee Jones is a primary care skin cancer clinician with expertise in the diagnosis and management of melanoma and other skin cancers. Before teaming up to form Northern Skin Doctors in 2019, he has worked throughout Cairns and is well known in the northern suburbs. He has extensive education in skin cancer medicine and has completed the Bond University Certified Professional Diploma of Skin Cancer Medicine and Professional Diploma of Dermoscopy (skin diagnosis). Dr Jones has proudly been awarded with Fellowship of the Skin Cancer Institute, a global organisation dedicated to reducing unnecessary deaths from skin cancer. He also continues to be passionate about all dermatology and recently spent a year working in the Cairns Hospital Dermatology Department. He is also a Committee of General Practice Chair for AMAQ.
GP to GP colleague referrals
An optional session this month to discuss improving GP to GP colleague referrals. In addition to skin cancer medicine, we have a breadth of extended skills amongst our GP colleagues in the Cairns region. From steroid injections, focussed psychological strategies, medical termination of pregnancy, gender affirming care ... the list goes on! HealthPathways can help promote this information, so let's start the discussion.
