Initial Assessment and Referral for Mental Healthcare Training

The Initial Assessment and Referral Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) is an evidence-based tool developed to support general practitioners (GPs) making well-informed decisions about mental health referrals. Its integration with Mental Health Care Plans (MHCPs) has been recommended in the recent review of ‘Better Access’ emphasising the necessity of a consistent, standardised, and evidence-based approach for mental health referrals nationwide.

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) invites GPs and service providers in the mental health sector to participate in a IAR-DST training session to understand how this tool can elevate your practice and enhance patient outcomes. GPs and GP Registrars may be eligible for a $300 reimbursement and 2 CPD Points. This is an RACGP-approved activity.

Learning outcomes include:  

• knowledge about the IAR-DST development process including the principles underpinning the evidence-based approach to stepped care in primary care 

• practising the skills to use the IAR-DST in a practical scenario

• being able to identify the Levels of Care and determine regional services available.
