Locum General Practitioner

Date posted: Wednesday 03 August 2022
Closing date: Thursday 01 December 2022

Herbert Street Family Medical Centre (HSFMC) is seeking a Locum General Practitioner to join their team in Bowen from 15 August, onwards.

HSFMC is a private medical practice owned by the Girudala Community Co-Operative Society (www.girudala.com.au) which is a local indigenous community organisation that also runs a housing co-operative and many health, family support and employment projects. The centre will run as a mixed fee for service and bulk billing practice with a focus on preventative health care and management of chronic illness. It has been operating from July 2010 and is open to the whole community.

The Centre has two consulting rooms, a procedure room, staff room, and two areas for visiting allied health specialists on the main street of Bowen. On staff are a 1 x Locum GP, 2 x Practice Nurses, 2 x Indigenous Health Worker, Practice Manager, and a receptionist. The centre is situated in a duplex setting with a private dental practice as a neighbour.

You will be seeing some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, utilising the Close the Gap Initiative for Indigenous Health, including the Practice Incentive Program (PIP) and PBS Co-Payment Scheme. HSFMC would like their staff to be community minded and support the community not for profit sector. HSFMC would also like staff to possess a healthy appreciation of, and commit to, utilising chronic disease prevention and management community health programs on offer in community.

You will see approximately 25+ patients per day approx.

About the role

  • $1,300 per day, GST incl; this fee is negotiable with management.
  • HSFMC is a sole practice, so it does get quite busy as you will be the only GP in the practice.
  • You will not be required to be on call.
  • Your hours of work would be:
    • Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday: 8am–5pm, closing for lunch (12.30pm–1.30pm)
    • Thursday and Friday: 7am–3pm, closing for lunch (12pm–1pm).
  • The centre uses Medical Director and Pracsoft 4.0a and prefer that the doctor be familiar with this computer software.
  • HSFMC is a general practice, not an AMS, but does focus on Indigenous Health. The centre would like the doctor to be familiar with, or willing to learn and perform, Health Checks (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, ages of 4, 45-49, and 75+) and Care Plans
  • HSFMC would prefer the GP to perform Cervical Smears, if this is not possible HSFMC will have to send their clinics to the Women’s Clinic at the local hospital.
  • The General Practitioner will need General Registration as HSFMC cannot provide supervision.
  • A surgery vehicle is provided for the GP to use.
  • Accommodation is provided and Flights (within Australia only) will be paid for the GP only.
  • You will need to visit nursing homes (if required, usually booked during the day, the centre does not currently have any patients) or complete a home visit for regular patients if requested (home visits are at the doctor’s discretion)
  • Locum GP’s will be picked up from the Proserpine-Whitsunday Airport.
