COVID Update – Prof Kristine Macartney
In this presentation, Professor Kristine Macartney will update health professionals on the latest developments in managing the COVID-19 pandemic here in Australia. Find out where we are up to in terms of vaccinating children, options for both vaccinations and boosters and issues surrounding the infection itself.

Japanese Encephalitis is in Australia – A Practical Guide – A/Prof Paul Griffin
In Australia, we are seeing more and more cases of Japanese Encephalitis. In this presentation, hear how this mosquito-transmitted disease has already killed a handful of people, and is likely to become more common, courtesy of record-breaking rainfall and warm temperatures.

Pigs are the animal host of the virus, and already at least 20 Australian farms have been found to have the infection among their livestock, raising concerns that the virus could spread to the country’s millions of feral pigs. Fortunately, there is an effective vaccine which health professionals will need to know about as it will soon be made widely available to those at risk.

Assessment and Management of Acute Migraine in Primary Care – Dr Bronwyn Jenkins
Accurately diagnosing migraine from the wide range of possible causes of headache relies largely on the clinical acumen of the treating doctor. In this  comprehensive presentation, neurologist Dr Bronwyn Jenkins presents a practical framework for the assessment of patients with painful headache, differentiating migraine from other, perhaps more pathological, diagnoses. She will also provide an update on the appropriate acute management of migraine as well as new therapies for management of chronic migraine.

Sleep and Depression - Dr Chris Blackwell
Are sleep problems a trigger or a consequence of depression? And does treating one help the other or should they be treated as two separate conditions? These are just some of the questions psychiatrist and sleep expert Dr Chris Blackwell addresses, as he presents the latest evidence on the interplay between these two conditions and outlines a practical approach to their assessment and management.
