Cairns and Hinterland workshops - Preventing, Recognising, and Managing Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD)

Queensland Health and the Menzies School of Health Research are hosting a series of workshops to provide clinical education and skills to health professionals who support people living with acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD).

Each workshop includes practical information and models of care related to group A streptococcus (Strep A) infections, ARF and RHD.

You will learn:

  • Opportunities for preventing ARF and RHD
  • Importance of managing throat and skin infections in high-risk populations, including swabbing for Strep A.
  • Recognising and managing ARF
  • Secondary prevention of ARF (including injection technique and pain management)
  • Recommended care for people living with RHD
  • Relevant HHS/local referral pathways
  • Local case studies and examples
  • Role of the Queensland Health RHD Program (Register)
  • How to communicate and deliver culturally safe and accessible healthcare to First Nations people.

You will receive:

  • Four (4) hours of Continuing Professional Development for daytime sessions.
  • Two (2) hours of Continuing Professional Development for the evening session.
  • Reading materials and links to clinical resources

Refreshments, light meals (morning sessions) and dinner (evening sessions)

Staff involved in the care and support of people with ARF and RHD and those who would like to learn more on this topic are strongly encouraged to attend.

The evening session on Tuesday, 27 May, will have a strong clinical focus and is particularly beneficial for GPs, pharmacists, and clinicians involved in the treatment and care of patients living with ARF and RHD.
